(G)raveyard brings nightclubs back to the clubbers.
It is a music archive for clubs in Rotterdam that are
no longer there. Explore what kind of music they listened to back in the days. Retrieve memories or
create new ones.

When a nightclub has to close its doors, it is a loss for the young Rotterdammer who loved going to the club.

As a subcultural-focussed graphic designer, I got upset by the fact how a fast growing city like Rotterdam made non-commercial nightclubs disappear. Nightclubs cannot stay at one location forever. When a nightclub has to close its doors, it is a loss for the young Rotterdammers who loved going to the club. The last club closing its doors had even a demonstration with hundreds of Rotterdammers dancing in front of the town hall. These disappointed clubbers became my target group for my research.

Rotterdam has an enormous history in the field of House.

Rotterdam has an enormous history in House. In the 90’s and 00’s Rotterdam convinced to be the nightlife capital of The Netherlands. Recently the city became increasingly popular, but her nightlife has not yet undergone the same positive development. A lot of clubs had to close their doors. All the clubbers have left, are the good memories.

That is why I created a tangible place for nightclubs that are no longer there. For every club that has left Rotterdam, a Maxi Single will be released, showcasing the most characteristic song from that time at that location. All together the records will represent the “Rotterdam Music Archive”.

Clubbers of today can relive the past and get inspired by its culture.

(G)raveyard brings the clubs back to the clubbers. It is a musical archive for the clubs in Rotterdam that are no longer there. You can discover what was played in these clubs. Retrieve memories or create new ones. Go to the Instagram page to listen to the musical archive.

This project is an ongoing process, because there will always be nightclubs that will disappear again. The project will not stop until the nightclubs no longer have to close their doors.
