With my collection I’m being vulnerable for the first time, sharing my own personal mental health struggles through my designs. I’m inspired by women in metal and punk music, as they serve as a way for me to cope with my feelings and finally feel a sense of belonging.

Bente Nagtegaal 2021 Graduation Project

The designs represent the fastness, adrenaline and aggressiveness of punk and metal music and culture. I hand-painted fabrics, used leftover scraps, I tore & ripped. Musicians like Joan Jett, Doro Pesch and Wendy O Williams inspired me through their strong looks and empowering messages. I used songtexts from them and other women in metal and punk, and combined them with my thoughts and feelings. I painted them on some of the designs and put them in prints.

My collection shows the raw and dark side of mental health problems, but it also has one strong message: that of empowerment. Through finding myself and my true confidence I know I can conquer everything. I hope I can inspire others who struggle with their mental health, to let them know that they are not alone – and you can get better.

I explored my room, which is basically a small museum of alternative music memorabilia combined with fabrics customized with paint, other materials and pictures. In a time where we spend a lot more time in our rooms, this was a natural path for me to take.

All of the pictures are taken inside of my room. Photo’s/make-up/hair/model all me & by me.
